The information below is a detailed checklist for the Passport to Teaching program. It is intended as a guide as you fulfill the requirements of the program. Your actual preparation timeframes may vary. The timeline presented here is suggested for a candidate wishing to complete the program in 9 months. Weeks 1-4 | Weeks 5-19 | Weeks 20-36
Weeks 1 - 4
- Enroll in the Passport to Teaching program
- Review your Welcome Kit and Candidate Handbook
- Complete Professional Teaching Knowledge and subject area Self-Assessments
- Receive initial contact from advisor
- Submit background check authorization to ABCTE and request transcripts be forwarded to ABCTE as proof of your bachelor's degree
- Advisor and candidate review of action plans and exam standards
- Review resource list, select free resources and choose any supplemental materials to be purchased
- Develop a study plan for both exams
Weeks 5 - 19 General study: Exam 1 (subject area)
- Schedule subject area exam with Pearson VUE
- Complete CD-ROM topic quizzes (these are available for purchase in MyPass)
- Review online refresher courses
- Study free resources from the web, local library, etc.
- Consult any supplemental review materials included in your study plan
- Prepare for the writing component (only required for the English Language Arts exam)
- Utilize our online essay assistance
- Contact the resident advisor for extra help if needed
- Complete full-length practice test on CD-ROM (these are available for purchase in MyPass)
- Confirm test date and review center regulations. Check out our tips for exam day.
- Take subject area exam
Weeks 20 - 36 General Study: Exam 2 (PTK)
- Schedule Professional Teaching Knowledge exam with Pearson VUE
- Complete CD-ROM topic quizzes (these are available for purchase in MyPass)
- Review online Prepare to Teach workshops
- Listen and train with the New Teacher Hotline
- Study free resources from the web, local library, etc.
- Consult any supplemental review materials included in your study plan
- Prepare for the writing component
- Utilize our online essay assistance
- Contact the resident advisor for extra help if needed
- Complete full-length practice test on CD-ROM (these are available for purchase in MyPass)
