- Center for Applied Linguistics
CAL is a group of scholars and educators who use
linguistics and related sciences in identifying and addressing
language-related problems. CAL carries out a wide range of activities
including research, teacher education, analysis and dissemination of
information, design and development of instructional materials,
technical assistance, conference planning, program evaluation, and
policy analysis.
- Free-Reading
Free-Reading is an “open source” instructional program that helps teachers teach early reading. Because it's open source, it represents the collective wisdom of a wide community of teachers and researchers. It's designed to contain a scope and sequence of activities that can support and supplement a typical “core” or “basal” program.
- Teaching Children to Read
In 1997, Congress asked the Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), in consultation with the Secretary of Education, to convene a national panel to assess the status of research-based knowledge, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching children to read. These topics (which correspond almost exactly to the domains defined by the American Board) received intensive study: alphabetics, fluency, comprehension, teacher education in reading acquisition, and reading-focused computer technology. - The Access Center
The Access Center is a national technical assistance center funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs whose mission is to improve educational outcomes for elementary and middle school students with disabilities. Their website includes webinars on important topics in special education, information briefs, presentations, toolkits, and video clips.
