Exam Preparation
- AlgebraHelp.com Calculators
These online calculators can help you check your answers for many common algebra problems. Just type in an equation to solve, an expression to simplify, a polynomial to factor, or a quadratic to complete the square, and the automated calculator does the rest. Not only is the answer provided, step-by-step instructions are also generated for your individual problem. It's an excellent tool to check your steps when completing textbook problems and are only given an answer. Now you can figure out exactly where your arithmetic faltered.
Just remember, no calculators are permitted during ABCTE's exams.
- An Introduction to Trigonometry
On a single webpage, Claeys manages to summarize most of the important topics of trigonometry. Follow the link at the bottom of the page to see numerous solved example problems based on those topics.
- Calc101.com
Calc101.com will solve "99.9%" of freshman derivative and integral problems; according to the site, "Out of nearly four thousand tests from four calculus books, there were a few calc101.com couldn't do." All you do is enter your derivative or integral problem, and the answer (along with a detailed explanation of each step) is generated. However, integral problems are not free—it will give you the answer, but if you want the steps listed and explained, you have to buy a password that will allow you to solve 900 problems at a cost of $15. (You can also multiply and divide polynomials step by step for free.)
- Calculus-Help.com
This site contains free Flash tutorials to help you review the basic concepts of calculus. In addition, there is a fully searchable bank of practice problems on just about any calculus topic, organized either alphabetically by topic or in sequence, by academic year.
- Collecting and Organizing Data
The links on this page take you to detailed explanations of how to illustrate data distributions, design scatter plots, and draw stem-and-leaf and box-and-whisker plots.
- Dave's Short Course in Trigonometry
Especially strong at establishing the geometric foundation of trigonometry, this site introduces most of the major trigonometric theorems and proves the majority of them. All of the figures on the site are generated with a Java applet, so if you are using a Java-enabled browser (such as recent versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape), you can click drag points in the diagrams to modify them, and the labels and measurements of the diagrams will adjust themselves automatically.
- Geometry Help
This site covers most basic geometric concepts in four stages: "first glance," in which the topics are introduced; "in depth," where more detailed attention is given to the underlying concepts; "examples"; and "workout," where sample problems are given and the user must put to use the information learned.
- Just the Facts (Basic Math Facts)
This interactive Web site contains thorough explanations that will cover basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division for whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Khan Academy
The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit organization with the mission of providing a high quality education to anyone, anywhere.
They have 800+ videos on YouTube covering everything from basic arithmetic and algebra to differential equations which have been recorded by Salman Khan.
This resource comes highly recommended from ABCTE's Math forum: http://www.abcte.org/forum/2926/.
- Linear Algebra Toolkit
An exhaustive set of on-line computational tools you can use to solve systems of equations, transform systems into Gauss Jordan matrices, perform row operations, transform a matrix into reduced row echelon form, calculate inverse matrices, and more. Although the American Board standards require you to perform these and other operations by hand, this is an excellent resource to help you double check your work as you review, because it works out any problem step by step, explaining each step along the way.
- Open Learning Initiative's Calculus Course
Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative (OLI) features a collection of openly available and free online courses and course materials that enact instruction for an entire course in an online format.
This course in calculus is currently under development, but has been made available while it is under development. The course material may undergo significant changes over the next several months.
- Open Learning Initiative's Statistics Course
Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative (OLI) features a collection of openly available and free online courses and course materials that enact instruction for an entire course in an online format.
This course is comparable to a full semester course on Statistics.
- Purplemath
At the time this resource list was written, there were over 110 links on this site, each leading to an accurate, friendly, and rigorous discussion of math topics, ranging from elementary topics like fractions all the way to complex matrix operations such as Gauss-Jordan elimination.
- SparkNotes Math Study Guides
SparkNotes Math Study Guides cover a wide range of math topics, detail steps for solving problems and equations, and include practice problems.
- StatSoft Electronic Textbook
The online and free Electronic Statistics Textbook offers training in the understanding and application of statistics. The material was developed at the StatSoft R&D department based on many years of teaching undergraduate and graduate statistics courses and covers a wide variety of applications, including laboratory research (biomedical, agricultural, etc.), business statistics and forecasting, social science statistics and survey research, data mining, engineering and quality control applications, and many others.
- Straighterline Algebra Course
Straighterline is an online school that provides courses for college credit. Introductory Algebra takes the learner through topics that teach the basics of algebra. Real-life scenarios students can relate to are used to teach difficult concepts and topics. After a pre-algebra review, this course focuses on the basics of algebra and includes math vocabulary and notation, operations with numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and quadratic equations. Students also learn to read and interpret graphs. Each course comes with live, online tutoring to help the student with any difficulties they might have.
- Straighterline Pre-Calculus Course
Straighterline offers an online Pre Calculus course that provides a working knowledge of precalculus and its applications. It begins with a review of algebraic operations. Emphasis is on solving and graphing equations that involve linear, polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Students learn to graph trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions and learn to use the family of trigonometric identities. Other topics include conic sections, arithmetic and geometric sequences, and systems of equations.
