Passport to Teaching certification requires candidates to pass computer-based exams that measure their subject area and professional teaching knowledge. These exams are rigorous and we encourage all candidates to allow adequate time to study.
To help, we have compiled a comprehensive database of materials that includes web sites, books and other media. ABCTE also offers products designed specifically for our exams such as practice tests on CD-ROM.
How to Prepare
The program is designed to allow you to prepare on your own time and at your own pace. You will be assigned an advisor to work with you to craft a study plan based on your unique preparation needs. ABCTE has developed the Prepare to Teach workshops to get you ready for the classroom and you will have access to online refresher courses to help you brush up on the topics needing the most review. Consult our Pathway to Success, a step by step guide through the requirements of the Passport to Teaching program.
As you move through the steps in the Pathway to Success, take advantage of our practice test CD-ROMs to assess your progress. Both full-length tests and quizzes are available and the software mimics the testing center environment so there are no surprises when you are faced with the real thing. Be sure to review the exam day tips and strategies.
Keep in mind that during the Professional Teaching Knowledge and English Language Arts exams, your writing will be tested. Learn more about the writing component and how you can prepare.
Preparation Resources
Your Advisor will help you complete a Self-Assessment and develop an Individualized Learning Plan for each exam. The Individualized Learning Plan identifies books, Web sites, online courses, and other materials that meet your preparation needs and budget.
