900 NEW TEACHERS
Posted January 4th, 2010 by Dave SabaBoldly going where no group has gone before - that is what ABCTE is all about. This month, we have set the unprecedented goal of recruiting 900 new teacher candidates into our program. To do this, we have discounted the program by $150 for January to give people the incentive to enroll.
Every one of our 34 employees are focused on making this goal a reality. We are going to be traveling across all our ABCTE states to talk to people who want to teach and get them focused on making their dream a reality.
Alternative Teacher Certification is part of the solution
Posted October 30th, 2009 by Dave SabaSecretary Arne Duncan hit the one-two punch of teacher preparation this week focusing on how poorly our teachers are prepared in general and then how they need a greater emphasis on math and science if we are to succeed as a nation.
“By almost any standard, many if not most of the nation’s 1,450 schools, colleges, and departments of education are doing a mediocre job of preparing teachers for the realities of the 21st century classroom.”
So very true.
Great Math Teachers

Washington State: looking for teacher certification options
Posted October 2nd, 2009 by Dave SabaWe’re seeing a lot of news and chatter coming out of Washington State that all points to the fact that they could really use ABCTE.
The Future of Teaching
Posted August 31st, 2009 by Dave SabaThere is a very important article on teaching by Rick Hess in EducationNext this month. He has some outstanding facts and great suggestions on what has to happen in teaching in order to maximize talent and increase student learning.
First the background – he uses one of my favorite stats about our society of career changers: by 30, most people have held 4 different jobs. So assuming that every kid in college going into teaching is going to stay in teaching through retirement is ludicrous.
More Men!
Posted August 21st, 2009 by Dave Saba"It's not glamorous, it's not a status position," said Schmitt, 44. "Guys at a young age are chasing after big dreams, big money. But at some point, later in life, they look for a job that's more meaningful." From the Fewer Male Teachers article in the Chicago Tribune.
Shortage and Surplus
Posted July 27th, 2009 by Dave SabaNo surprise here. People have the hardest time wrapping their minds around the following two truths:
- There is a surplus of teachers
- There is a shortage of teachers
Both statements are true. There is a surplus of elementary teachers. But there are HUGE shortages of math, science and special education teachers.
Scalable and Sustainable
Posted July 27th, 2009 by Dave SabaOne of the big issues with the ARRA funds and the Race to the Top challenge is the supposed short term nature of this incredible boost in funding. This is a one time opportunity with billions of dollars to be used to give our education system a push in the right direction.
The concern from all sides is what will happen when the funds are gone.
On the right, they are deathly afraid that the spending will continue and the results will be mediocre at best. On the left, they are deathly afraid that the opportunity will be squandered with little or nothing to show for it.
Shortsighted is as shortsighted does
Posted April 14th, 2009 by Dave SabaI have been trying to keep up on the stimulus dollars to see if it is really going to prevent teacher layoffs etc. First, my amazing ABCTE team got word last week from Utah that there is a hiring freeze on teachers right now. After a four year pilot using our math program, we were recently approved in Utah for all ABCTE certifications because they were constantly facing teacher shortages and knew they had looming teacher retirements. One district that normally hires 300 teachers will hire less than 50 next year.
FEAR THE TSUNAMI
Posted April 7th, 2009 by Dave SabaPretty interesting day for education in the press as they are finally breaking the story that I broke on March 20, 2009 about the pending “tsunami” of teacher retirements. USA Today has a piece about it quoting Tom Carroll from NCTAF saying that “we will lose one third of our teachers in the next 5-6 years”.
