Demand for High-Need Subject Area Teachers

Sometimes a member of the press will ask us why we’re recruiting aspiring teachers into our teaching certification program or into our teaching scholarship program in areas that are seeing teacher layoffs.

Our response is that one, our program takes the average candidate eight to ten months to complete, so by the time someone just entering our program completes it, the job market may not be the same as it was when they started work on their ABCTE certification. And two, even in times of budget cuts and layoffs, we often see that districts are still looking to fill positions in high-need schools and subjects.

A recent article in the Miami Herald drives this second point home. The article states that Broward school district "laid off nearly 400 teachers last summer and faces another budget shortfall that could result on more lost jobs this year," yet "the district hired more than 400 teachers in critical shortage areas" last year and is still looking to hire teachers to "fill jobs in critical areas where there is a consistent shortage."

According to the article, "Broward has openings or expects to have openings in math, science, English, reading and special education." ABCTE’s District Outreach Coordinator runs into examples like this throughout the country—despite layoffs, high-need subject teachers frequently remain in demand.

If you’re thinking about earning your teaching certification through ABCTE, or any other program, it’s wise—for the sake of getting hired—to strike a balance between a subject area that interests you and the subjects that are in demand.

We recommend that ABCTE candidates contact the districts where they are interested in teaching to find out what subjects they have job openings in and what subjects they traditionally have the most need for—earning a certification in a high-need subject area can go a long way when it comes time to apply for jobs.

On the flip side of that, it’s important that aspiring teachers choose a certification area that they will want to teach—no one really wins if you have teachers who are unhappy because they chose a subject area that was in-demand but that they have no interest in teaching. The certification process and someone’s teaching career can both be a lot more enjoyable when the subject is something the individual has an interest in.

To learn how you can receive a scholarship to earn your teaching certification and help in high-need schools and subjects in Florida, South Carolina or Mississippi, please have a look at our Teach & Inspire Scholarship Program, which is funded by a U.S. Department of Education Transition to Teaching Grant.

If the scholarship program is not of interest but you are interested in a career in teaching, ABCTE certification is accepted in nine states and you can learn more about our program in the Become a Teacher section of our website.

I am more concerned with

I am more concerned with whether I could get a job teaching at all at my age (53), even if I get certified in a high-need area. I have been very tossed about going into teaching because of that.

I know that's a big problem.

I know that's a big problem. But don't be afraid. My dad is the same age. He is working in a custom writing company.

Adjel1, we've had people

Adjel1, we've had people older than 53 go through our program and get hired to teach. And, on top of that, 53 is young! You could always run into someone who chooses to discriminate based on age, in the education sector or elsewhere, but hopefully you won't. If you do, I hope you won't let that discourage you and that you'll continue to apply for other teaching jobs.
