Tell us why you want to teach – in 140 characters or less

We hear great stories all the time about why someone wants to become a teacher—and we can’t get enough of them.

Now, we want to pick one aspiring teacher and help them get started toward having a classroom of their own, by giving them a scholarship to earn their ABCTE teaching certification. To be considered, all you have to do is tell us why you want to become a teacher. But here’s the catch—you have to do it using Twitter, so that means you have to tell us why in 140 characters or less. Just tweet your response by noon ET on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 and include the hashtag #pickmeabcte.

More on the ABCTE Program
ABCTE offers an innovative, online teaching certification program designed for new teachers. The program is currently accepted by nine states for their public schools—Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah—as well as by some charter and private schools. To date, over 7,500 people have enrolled in the program and more than 1,800 certifications have been issued. The average candidate takes 8 to 10 months to complete earn their certification. Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree, pass a background check and pass two rigorous and comprehensive exams: one on Professional Teaching Knowledge (PTK) and one in their subject matter followed by intensive mentoring during their first year in the classroom. Visit www.abcte.org to learn more.

The winner will receive a full scholarship toward one standard ABCTE certification, which normally costs $975. This contest is only open to individuals not already enrolled in the ABCTE program.

UPDATE: 9/23/09 -- We had about 100 submissions for the scholarship contest. Thank you to all who entered! We will announce three finalists tomorrow afternoon. Check back here then or follow us on Twitter to find out who the three finalists are and how we will pick a winner.

"one aspiring teacher and help them" [sic]

If you help ONE aspiring teacher, why would you refer to ONE person as "them"? I hope it's an English teacher you put your money on!

Unfortunately Brad, your

Unfortunately Brad, your comment isn't entirely correct. There is no error, colloquial or grammatical when 'them' is used instead of him or her when the sentence refers to a person of unknown sex or people of both sexes.

As is explained in the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary:
"The use of they, their, them, and themselves as pronouns of indefinite gender and indefinite number is well established in speech and writing, even in literary and formal contexts. This gives you the option of using the plural pronouns where you think they sound best, and of using the singular pronouns (as he, she, he or she, and their inflected forms) where you think they sound best."

Using 'them' in this case is, in effect, politically correct.

After you've logged into Twitter, you need to go to the Twitter "Home" page and then type your message into the box below where it says "What are you doing?" and then hit "Update" to send it. Be sure to include #pickmeabcte in the tweet for the contest. I hope this helps.

#pickmeabcte I've been a sub (Severely Underpaid Babysitter) for three years. For the umpteenth time, my students asked me when I was gonna be a real teacher. The pay is crappy, but I seem to be addicted to the job. The children seem to need me and I have fallen in love with them. All of them! I'm stuck. It is the most entertaining, challenging thing I've ever done.

I have always valued

I have always valued education and teaching. Even as a little girl when we played school, I was the "teacher". Once I graduated college with a BA, I substitute taught for awhile and thus, my passion for educating children grew even more. Briefly I had my own classroom in which I taught 2nd and 3rd grade. However, my career path landed me in the nonprofit world and while I enjoy working in development, my heart still yearns to be in the classroom. A friend told me about the ABCTE program and I went to an info session to learn more. While the program sounds rigorous, it would be a great way to get back into the classroom which has been a dream deferred of mine for a long time.

“Wow, a chance to be a teacher without going back to get another degree". I can't wait to become a teacher and bring my knowledge, my background, my enthusiasm, and my talents and show the students how they can apply it to the real world.

Christopher,

Christopher, congratulations! I voted for you and thought your twitter entry was fantastic! Good luck.
